October 2016, Dr. Supawadee Parhira, a lecturer in the Department of
Pharmaceutical Technology, in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Naresuan
University, won the “Macao Scientific and Technological R&D for
Postgraduates Award 2016” from The Science and Technology
Development Fund, Macao Government. The research topic was “Bioactive
Components from Calotropis Gigantea” advised by Chair Professor Dr. Zhi-Hong
JIANG, Macau University of Science and Technology, Taipa, Macau, China.
Supawadee Parhira's s tudy showed that the bioactive components
from Calotropis gigantean have an inhibitory effect against human
influenza viruses. This is good evidence supporting research on Calotropis
Gigantea, a herb that has been used in Thai and Chinese traditional medicine
and by physicians for a long time. Based on the study outcomes, the research
team has registered 3 international patents and published in 3 international
journals with good impact factors. In addition, the results of the study can
also be used for further studies on the production of inhibitory drugs against
cancer, viruses, and inflammation.
