In
2003, Naresuan University introduced about 40 solar
buses on campus. These buses - made by Electronic Vehicles
Thailand - were brought to NU to help promote the use
of renewable energy and reduce the use of regular vehicles
around campus.
There are about 40 environmenally friendly solar buses
at Naresuan University that pick up staff and students
from about 6:30am til midnightt and transport them around
the large campus at Nong-Or. There are several routes
and each is colour coded for ease of use.
The key to their "green power" is the fact
the htey harness the sun's energy to generate electricity
to charge the batteries in the mini-buses. Normal electric
vehicles are charged by pollution-producing power plants
Naresuan University has its own "solar plant"
on campus.
Right: A solar mini-bus recharging
at the solar plant.
The Vehicles take about one month to
construct and seat up to 20 passengers (15 comfortably).
They travel to speeds of 40km an hour which is ideal
for moving around the campus.
It is hoped that soon, many of the Universities in Thailand
will start using the solar buses at their campues in
various ciies. |
