Thalassemia is the leading genetic
problem in Thai population especially in the northern
region. Patients with severe thalassemic disease suffer
from chronic anemia need
regular blood transfusions and finally end up with many
complications either from transfusions or disease itself.
Fetuses with hydrops fetalis are stillborn or die shortly
after birth posing serious maternal morbidities or even
mortalities. The Thalassemia research unit was held to
cope with this health problem in this area. Established
and supervised by Professor Torpong Sanguansermsri from
Chiang Mai university, The Thalassemia research unit began
work in August 2002. Aiming at prevention and control
of severe thalassemia disease, the Thalassemia research
unit conducted the researches and services to support
the local public heath system, ie. provincial and community
hospitals, in Phitsanulok and nearby provinces. By establishing
the local thalassemic controlling network, we could work
side by side with the local health personnel together
with developing the new technique or system to control
thalassemic disease birth in the lower northern region.
With our facilities, we can do screening the thalassemic
carriers, matching for the couples at risk of having a
child with severe thalassemic disease and investigate
the specimens from prenatal diagnosis using from routine
hematology test to molecular technique.
