Community Service & Culture:  Nu Mobile Unit

Naresuan University Mobile Unit
In line with its commitment to be of service to the community, especially in the lower northern region, the area covered by the university; a "mobile unit' was created to review and assist in the health and careers of the community by using the academic staff and specialists from the Science, Health Science, Humanities and Social Science faculties to visit communities in the region. Mobile Unit does dentistry in a classroom

They are able to help the local people in many way by being consultants, exchanging knowledge on how to develop products, assisting with academic matters and also giving guidance on how to manage the community. The university also surveys what they need to plan for in the near future as a way to help solve the community's problems.

An example of the work of this unit can be found when, In mid-May 2003, more than 2000 people in Wang Chin District, Phrae, suffered from the disastrous floods caused by very heavy rain in Phrae Province. In tambon Sroy, tambon Mae Poong, and tambon Pasak, 34 people were killed, 3 were lost, and 170 houses and thousands of rai of farmland were damaged.

The University sent a group of staff to survey the damage and determine the villagers' needs. A mobile unit was sent to help the people on 9 and 10 June, at Pang Hi Temple, tambon Mae Poong, Wang Chin District, Phrae.

Staff from Naresuan University's three academic clusters went to assist the casualties. The Health Sciences group, which includes doctors and dentists, offered free health examinations, blood checks, electrocardiograms, maternity training, and dental services. Staff from the Science and Technology group provided information on crop and animal production, clean water supplies, products from local plants, tool maintenance, housing construction, and electricity supply. Staff from the Humanities and Social Sciences group provided psychological counselling, because almost all of the villagers were sufferIng from the loss of relatives or property. Also, staff and students donated dried food, clothes, and other necessities. Thus the Naresuan Unlversity mobile unit was one of the sources of relief which will help rehabilitate the quality of life for the people in Wang Chin District.
