Conservation of Thai traditional art
and culture is one mission of Naresuan University. The Centre
for Art and Culture has had an outstanding role in supporting
and promoting our precious heritage. The Centre is in charge
of finding ways to promote Thai intellectual property, Thai
art and culture, and encourage people to realize how much
this heritage means and how it reflects our way of life.
The Centre extensively collects Thai cultural and intellectual
property information, etc., and acts like information centre
to guide and advise interested people on the matter of cultural
heritage.
The Center of Art and Culture is located on the city campus
of Naresuan University, on Sanambin Road, Phitsanulok. It
was established for preserving and promoting art and culture.
The Center consists of Exhibition Hall, Museum, and Data Centre.
The Exhibition Hall shows more than 100 works of art by nationally
renowned visual artists, such as Aj. Sawat Tantisuk, Aj. Poon
Kagjumras, Aj. Prayoon Uruchata, Aj. Jait Jongmankong, and
Aj. Kamon Tasanangchalee, and by famous Thai artists, such
as Aj. Pratuan Amijarong, Aj. Charermchai Kositpipat, Aj.
Chuwvarit Sermpongsok, and Mr. Chuag Leekpai (former Prime
Minister). The Museum represents the way of life in the lower
northern Thailand, by displaying art efacts that were used
for living, palm leaf scripts, printed Buddha, and traditional
medicine. The Data Centre collects data of local study projects,
music, and performing arts.
The establishment of a cultural institution
had been long requested to the university for the purposes
of completely covering art and cultural events, and of improving
the efficiency in the organizing system. It was agreed that
the Centre of Art and Culture would be established on 13 February
2002. The purposes of the Centre rightly meet one of the main
missions of the university: to preserve art and culture. This
mission is derived from the location of the university, lower
north as well as upper centre of Thailand, a place where two
cultures are mixed and the cultural diversity is observed.
Naresuan University has a duty to encourage students and local
people to seriously think about the value and the beauty of
their own culture. The Centre enables the university to realise
this duty successfully and effectively.
The Centre aims to continuously preserve
and create the art, culture, and local knowledge in the lower
northern Thailand, in order to realise the lasting development.
